Russell Saxton has started a flickr site for the Erewash Valley Line, and
would like to invite anyone to post any shots taken along the line.  He
will add large numbers of my own, but he has nothing before 1978, and
would like to get the '50s, '60s and '70s well represented.

Blackpool Trams
Various events are taking place in 2010 to celebrate the 125th anniversary
of Blackpool trams, claimed to be the first in the UK and one of the first
in the world.  The highlight will be an open day at Rigby Road Depot on
Sunday 16th September when a frequent service of vintage trams will be
operating between Bispham and the depot.  Trams Magazine have set the
official event website at:

carrying the B4157 under the main Wolverhampton-Birmingham New Street

Netherlands/Belgium
Thalys trains on the new HSL from Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam to
Antwerp in Belgium have halved the journey time for the 60 mile Antwerp-
Rotterdam route to 30 minutes and reduced Amsterdam-Paris by 50 minutes,
cutting the average journey times to 3hr 20min.

Belgium/Germany
The new HSL between Lige and the German border at Aachen is now used by
DB ICE and Thalys trains.  Journey time from Paris to Kln are reduced by
35 minutes to 3hr 15min.  Both this line and the one from Antwerp use the
ERTMS train management and signalling system.

Switzerland
Amazing!  This site gives a link to another site that shows real-time
positions of specific Swiss trains.

Turkey
Construction of Turkey's first high-speed railway, the 152-mile line
linking the capital Ankara to the western city of Eskisehir, started in
2003 and opened in March 2009.  Construction of a further high-speed link
from Eskisehir to Istanbul has commenced after a Chinese consortium won
the tender.

India
Facts revealed on 'Bombay Railway' (BBC4 Saturday 6th February).  50% of
all rail journeys in India are to/from Mumbai, and by 2020, the city is
set to be the largest in the world.  Each day 6 million commuters travel
on the city's suburban rail network and every year 3,500 of those die,
mostly crossing the track or falling from trains.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, is due to start in 2012, with services on the
first section running by 2020.

China-Kazakhstan
A link was opened on 18th December 2009 between Xinjiang province in NW
China and Kazakhstan.  The 178-mile long line forms a route avoiding
Russia although gauge differences will inhibit development of through
services.

Cuba
All you need to know about Cuban railways:

USA
Plans are being developed for a twice-daily passenger service between
Chicago and Iowa City 220 miles to the west.  The five-hour journey would
be operated by Amtrak using Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF)
and Iowa Interstate Railway tracks.

Canada
Work is to start shortly on upgrading the 335-mile line between Toronto
and Montreal.  Passenger schedules will be accelerated and extra track
added at passing places to reduce conflicting rail-freight paths.
